Weir Mitchell, que estuvo a punto de llevarla al colapso—, el relato es a la vez un cuento de terror gótico, un estudio psicológico del encierro y una feroz denuncia del control médico y social sobre las mujeres en el siglo XIX.Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860–1935), socióloga, activista feminista y una de las figuras intelectuales más importantes de su tiempo, envió una copia del relato terminado al propio Mitchell. Él nunca respondió.
