El sombrero de tres picos se publicó en 1874, aunque los sucesos que narra se sitúan en 1800, y es una obra de estilo realista que se desarrolla en algún pueblo de Granada durante el reinado de Carlos IV. La novela, la más conocida de Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, cuenta una divertida trama de enredos amorosos en la que un comendador hace todo lo posible por ganarse el alibro que goza de gran popularidad sobre todo porque Manuel de Falla se inspiró en él para componer una obra de ballet que se estrenó con rotundo éxito en Londres en 1919 y cuyos ritmos y melodías aluden a diferentes partes de la geografía española.
