Era importante hacer una obra histórica novelada sobre el Cid porque la parte de su vida antes del primer destierro es completamente desconocida y lo prueba el hecho de que se considere su año de nacimiento alrededor de 1048, cuando Carlos III y los monjes de Cardeña afirman que fue en 1026; veintidós años de diferencia que esconden la primera parte de su vida. Esta obra trae al pie de la historia los hechos bélicos y otros no tan marciales del Cid. La forja es la de su mesnada y el milagro es el rompimiento del gran ejército almorávide con solo un gran puñado de hombres. En la primera parte, hasta el destierro, siguiendo la Historia de Cardeña del Cid, el «Campeador» unifica Castilla y León como logro más importante, tras más de veinte campañas y combates. Y después de ser desterrado, en la segunda parte, siguiendo el Carmen Campidoctoris y la Historia Roderici, se hace señor del Levante, gana Valencia y derrota a dos grandes ejércitos almorávides, salvando a España del ciclón que se le avecinaba tras la derrota de Sagrajas. La razón por la que don Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar se merece estos libros la justifica el escritor musulmán de Santarem, nacido en 1058, Ibn Bassam, quien se refiere al Cid en varias ocasiones como «uno de los milagros del Creador».
