The book tells the story of the building of the Madeira-Mamoré Railways from 1907-12. The purpose of the railroad was to transport rubber from the frontiers of Brazil and Bolivia passing the rapids of the river Madeira to the world market. The building of the railroad cost the lives of thousands of workers. The inauguration of the railroad coincided with drastic falls on the price of rubber, thereby turning the railroad uneconomic - and thus unusable.
