En 1704, David Nieto, rabino de la comunidad sefardí de Londres, publica De la Divina Providencia o Naturaleza Universal, una obra que marcaría un hito en la historia del pensamiento judío. El tratado surge tras una controversia en la Yeshivá de Londres, donde Nieto fue acusado de panteísmo por afirmar: “Dios y Naturaleza, Naturaleza y Dios, es todo uno”.A través de dos diálogos entre Rubén y Simón, Nieto refuta la creencia en una “Naturaleza Universal” independiente y demuestra que Dios es la verdadera Naturaleza (Natura Naturante), gobernando el mundo mediante Su Providencia. Con una argumentación que combina lógica filosófica y autoridad bíblica, el autor explica los tres grados de Providencia (Universal, Particular y Milagrosa) y desmonta el error de atribuir a la Naturaleza lo que pertenece a Dios.Nieto se adelantó a su tiempo al advertir que la Naturaleza, convertida en ídolo por la modernidad, conduciría al deísmo y a la negación de la acción divina. Citando el Talmud, el Zohar, Maimónides y Yehudah Haleví, ofrece una defensa brillante contra el pensamiento secular emergente y una visión profunda sobre la relación entre lo divino, lo natural y los milagros.
