Esta obra, publicada en Buenos Aires en 1917 por la Sociedad Cooperativa Editorial Limitada, reúne quince relatos de los dieciocho originales, después de que el autor eliminara Los ojos sombríos, El infierno artificial y El perro rabioso. El libro, considerado como una obra cumbre del modernismo latinoamericano, muestra la maestría del autor en la narración del terror, lo que ha llevado a algunos críticos a compararlo con Maupassant o Poe. Se trata, además, de la obra más representativa de Quiroga, cuya vida estuvo marcada por las tres palabras que forman el título: amor, locura y muerte, siendo esta última la más presente en los cuentos. El autor trata también otros temas como la humanización de los animales, quienes con un pensamiento racional dirigen las historias, o la deshumanización del hombre, que cede su voluntad a los instintos más primitivos.
