O aumento aparentemente recente das intervenções militares em Estados envolvidos em conflitos civis (Iraque, Iémen, Síria, Afeganistão, etc.) leva a que se questione o porquê destas acções, apesar dos apelos tradicionais à não intervenção. Este livro testa estatisticamente numerosas variáveis independentes sobre a ocorrência de intervenções a nível transnacional. Em particular, este livro centra-se, em três capítulos, nas capacidades hegemónicas dos Estados Unidos ao intervir (ou não) em casos no Médio Oriente durante a Guerra Fria e no pós-Guerra Fria. A reação dos Estados Unidos às crises no Líbano, na Argélia e na Líbia constituem exemplos interessantes para comparação com os resultados transnacionais e completam uma abordagem de métodos mistos para compreender as causas das intervenções militares de terceiros em conflitos internos.
