Existen diversos factores que pueden provocar la contaminación de suelos por metales pesados, entre ellos se encuentran la industria petroquímica, el uso de agroquímicos y la actividad minera, por mencionar algunos. Sin embargo, existen algunos métodos que pueden ser utilizados para ayudar a la descontaminación del suelo, y dentro de éstos se encuentran los fisicoquímicos y los biológicos. Uno de los métodos biológicos a los que hay que prestarle especial atención es al proceso de biorremediación, ya que este hace uso de microorganismos para ayudar a la transformación de los contaminantes presentes en el suelo por medio de procesos microbianos, como es la biosorción; que consiste en la captación de iones metálicos por medio de biomasa viva o muerta a través de mecanismos como la adsorción y el intercambio iónico. En el presente trabajo de investigación se estudió el proceso de biosorción utilizando biomasa de Saccharomyces cerevisiae como biosorbente para la remoción de manganeso y zinc, cuyas concentraciones estaban presentes en los sedimentos.
