Lo cubano en la poesía de Cintio Vitier, meditación señera sobre la relación entre poesía y nación, adolece de un esencialismo que no reconoce los prejuicios que lo sostienen. Ahora bien, si la imprecisión de lo cubano lastra sus argumentos, también deja entreabierta una caja de resonancias donde Montero sitúa su lectura de las elegías osiánicas de Luisa Pérez de Zambrana, el encuentro entre Antonio Maceo y Julián del Casal, la protesta antirracista de Rafael Serra y la odisea criolla del diario de José Martí. Azares de lo cubano pretende compensar las fobias y exclusiones de nuestras identidades amuralladas con la oferta de una andanza compartida por las letras. Oscar J. Montero nació en Cienfuegos, Cuba. Además de Erotismo y representación en Julián del Casal, también en Almenara, ha publicado The Name Game, sobre Severo Sarduy; José Martí: an Introduction y Bobby’s Cuba. Prelude to a Revolution. Sus artículos sobre el Modernismo atienden sobre todo a las representaciones y las fobias en torno a heterodoxias génerico-sexuales. Montero ha sido profesor titular en Lehman College y The Graduate Center, City University of New York. Reside en New York.
