Quan a mitjan de la dècada dels seixanta Mikel Dufrenne publicà els dos textos que es recullen ací («LArt est il langage?» en la Revue dEsthétique, XIX, 1, París, 1966; «Formalisme logique et formalisme esthétique» en Annales dEsthétique, Atenes, 1964), històricament encara es trobava en auge, no hi ha dubte, la radicalització del tema tan seductor com polèmic de la potencialitat lingüística de lart. Una qüestió debatuda llargament i acalorada i en la qual Mikel Dufrenne va decidir també dinvolucrar-se, prenent-hi part, en aquell moment.
