Jerez de la Frontera, una noche  lluviosa de febrero de 2004. En uno de los barrios más ricos de la ciudad, aparece muerta en el salón de su casa Ana Estrada. Desde el primer momento todo apunta a un suicidio,  pero la familia niega esa posibilidad. El inspector Manuel Gómez, encargado del caso, intuye que algo no encaja y comienza a investigar la vida de esa mujer. A medida que  se va desarrollando la investigación, se van descubriendo los secretos que la vida de Ana Estrada, una mujer con una existencia aparentemente sencilla, escondía. Con un lenguaje claro y sencillo pero, al mismo tiempo, contundente, María del Carmen López Valle nos va introduciendo en un apasionante relato que contiene muchas de las circunstancias que caracterizan la sociedad actual. La novela es vibrante, con un ritmo pasional que sirve para introducir al lector en una galería de situaciones y personajes que se vuelven absolutamente cómplices. Esta novela, que en principio puede parecer  simplemente  un thriller romántico, trata  también los temas universales y atemporales de la literatura: la amistad, el amor, la venganza y la muerte. Por último, la autora trata además de plantear el dilema entre lo que es  moralmente  justo pero no es legal  y lo que es legal pero injusto. Los personajes se mueven constantemente en  esa encrucijada impulsando al lector a hacer una reflexión sobre sus propios valores y principios éticos.
