Bakterien sind mikroskopisch kleine lebende Organismen, die überall zu finden sind und gefährliche Krankheiten verursachen können. Im letzten Jahrzehnt wurden neue Klassen von anorganischen Verbundmaterialien mit antibakteriellen Eigenschaften entwickelt. Die Idee war, Tone, Zeolithe oder auch Mesoporen durch verschiedene Methoden mit einem oder mehreren Metallkationen mit antibakteriellen Eigenschaften wie Ag+, Cu2+ aufzuladen. Diese Materialien wurden aufgrund ihrer Ionenaustauschkapazität, ihrer großen spezifischen Oberfläche, ihrer Absorptionskapazität und ihrer negativen Oberflächenladung sowie ihrer geringen oder gar keinen Toxizität als Trägermaterialien verwendet. Verschiedene antibakterielle Materialien und Verbundstoffe wie Al-Magadiit-Cu werden in verschiedenen Bereichen wie Katalyse, Umwelt, Gesundheit und Nanotechnologie eingesetzt.
