En abril de 1514, el Adelantado Diego Velázquez perpetuaba en tinta uno de los sucesos más trascendentales relacionados con la historia de la ciudad cubana de Matanzas, la muerte de españoles a manos de los nativos en la bahía conocida como Guanima. Esta fatal contingencia determinó la imposición del nombre de Matanzas a la bahía, desapareciendo para siempre el topónimo aborigen y dando nombre a una ciudad que sería fundada casi 200 años después. La Carta de Relación de Velázquez, hasta ahora la fuente primaria más antigua que aborda el asunto, ha sido el principal pilar de un análisis y reevaluación profundos donde se presenta una visión particular de la supuesta matanza, considerando y cotejando la información con otros textos posteriores. En un terreno donde la distancia temporal y la influencia humana han jugado su papel, resulta difícil consolidar, categóricamente, las ideas tradicionales o las novedosas. El principal propósito de este texto es poner en consideración del lector esta nueva perspectiva de nuestra historia prístina, con la ilusión en que este constituya solamente un punto y seguido en los intentos de desenredar la enmarañada madeja de la historia de esa fascinante ciudad que lleva por nombre Matanzas.
